Wait a sec - that TD04 on the Legacy....is it single or twin scroll?

if it's twin scroll....that TD04 is probably the stock turbo on that Legacy (I didn't realise this car was a manual - supposedly the M/T's and A/T's use different turbos). If it is a manual, I'm not too sure that the VF38 IS the stock turbo for this car....cuz early Legacy M/T's use TD04's apparently.

I'll let the Legacy experts confirm.... but just a point to note.

(You'll know if it's twin scroll by looking at the headers and / or uppipe).

When I spoke with him a few months ago, I didnt know it was a manual either - that's when he bought the OE VF piping from me..

It's only a few weeks ago I learned of the twinscroll TD04.

Well one of the guys I spoke to said that the twin scroll TD04 (if he wasn't BS-ing me) should be a bit better than the VF38, cuz it uses a slightly larger compressor wheel than "older" TD04-13G found on the WRX's.......it may be a 19T compressor. Maybe not.

But 19T's are often touted as being like "almost" VF30-like in the mid range....it might even be 270-280 whp capable.

Again, I'm not sure these turbos exist in twin scroll form. If they do....and they have a 19T compressor....well bai.....

From my knowledge, the turbo was swapped out for a TD04 as the previous owner could not get a replacement VF38. He told me he had the old broken VF38 home still if I wanted it. He also told me that he hacked the TS setup to adapt the TD04 setup. I also think the car originally was manual but I could be proven wrong.

^^Ah, so he probably use a single scroll wrx TD04 then? It'd be a nice idea to see what that turbo really is. At any rate, given the condition of the car/engine.....perhaps that TD04 he put in is also on it's last breath/blowing oil.

Are you sure it's not the Legacy GT Spec B's manuals that are TD04 equipped? I will doublecheck the exhaust work and see if the flanges were altered as he said.

Also, when I pulled the intercooler, the intercooler was pretty clean but on the compressor housing of the turbo there was black oil still wet, so it may be on the way if not gone already. Will take some more pics later as the drama unfolds.

Question are all Spec B's GT's or are they regular Spec B's and GT Spec B's?

    THe spec B is technically a GT-B
The spec B comes with mostly cosmetic and suspension differences.

    Bumpers and trim
suspension - aluminum arms, bilstein struts

    audio?
